Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado, and grew up in Springfield, Oregon, graduating from the University of Oregon in 1957. He began writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1960 following the completion of a graduate fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University; the novel was an immediate Kesey's next novel, Sometimes a Great Notion (1964), appeared two years later and was also made into a film, this time directed by Paul Newman. The story was set in a logging community and centered on two brothers and their bitter rivalry in the family. After the work, Kesey gave up publishing novels. Author Kenneth Elton Kesey was born September 17, 1935 in La Junta, Colorado to Geneva and Frederick A. Kesey, who were dairy farmers. He was best known for penning the novels “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Sometimes a Great Notion”, the latter of which, many critics believed to be his magnum opus. Sometimes a Great Notion is the second novel by American author Ken Kesey, published in 1964.
